Tucson Restaurants of the Week - October 23, 2019

I know that many people idolize bacon as the king of meats but I think that, that opinion settling for mediocrity. In my ~always~ humble opinion the supreme meat of the land is steak. There are so many different cuts of steak but also you cannot forget about the side dishes. One of the most beautiful things about steak is that any side dish goes well with this beautiful piece of meat. Mashed potatoes, salad, brussel sprouts, asparagus, baked potato? I can go on forever but all of these are great options for side dishes. How can you go wrong with a beautiful piece of steak? This week's restaurants of the week encapsulates three different steak restaurants around Tucson to try out or go to.

Daisy Mae's Steak House

When I think of steak in Tucson, I think of Daisy Mae's. I just love this place with its Southwestern cowboy ambiance and it's delicious steak. Established 29 years ago, Daisy Mae's objective was to deliver great steak at an affordable price in it's Southwestern setting. Years later they are still achieving this standard and seem to have no plans of stopping. As far as the menu goes, there are plenty of great options for steak. The steak entree does come with a house salad but there are good appetizer options if you're hungry. The two selections are the grilled buffalo wings or the chips and salsa. I've had both over time of eating there but my favorite option were the chips and salsa. Next up we have the entree portion. My personal favorite is the dish at the bottom of the photo above which is the 9 oz filet. This beautiful piece of meat is so buttery and feels as if it melts in your mouth, it is so delicious. The sides it comes with are the baked potato, beans, and buttered bread. Other sirloin selections to choose from are the 14 oz ribeye, top sirloin, 18 oz t-bone, or the 32 oz porterhouse. If you're not feeling steak then there are other meat or fish options such as baby-back ribs, 10 oz porkchop, 1/2 chicken, catch of the day, or the rib and chicken combination plate. With so many options off of the menu to choose from, I wholeheartedly love and encourage anyone to go here if they're in the mood for some great steak.

Charro Steak

My dad came to visit me about two weeks ago and we're both steak lovers but wanted to go somewhere new so we settled upon this downtown location. Charro Steak is a sister restaurant to Charro Cafe which I discussed in a different restaurants of the week blog post all about three great Mexican spots around Tucson. It's a relatively new steakhouse that opened three years ago but kept the same Mexican atmosphere that the other Charro Cafe restaurants exude. As for the menu, it is a traditional steakhouse menu but still has the Mexican flair to it. Initially you start off with chips and salsa but there are some other appetizer options such as the tableside guacamole. Next up is the entree portion. Pictured above is the filet. All of the steak options are mesquite fired and come with frijoles charro (beans) and tortillas. You can also add 'carne complementos' to your steak dish such as estilo charro (cheese), mar y tierra (garlic shrimp), or langosta de mezquite (lobster tail). Other steak options include t-bone, chef's cut, rib eye, bone in strip, and carne asada. You can also order side dishes, similar to tapas, which are side dishes meant to be split between two people. We ordered the papas de la casa which is thinly sliced potatoes with mixed chiles in a cream sauce. If you want try to a new Mexican infused steakhouse then I'd recommend this spot.

Li'l Abner's Steakhouse

Located on the complete opposite side of town from the other two spots is this simplistic, Southwestern steakhouse. Li'l Abner's first opened its doors in 1947 and owners named the spot after their dog Abner, reminiscent of popular cartoon Li'l Abner. This spot's atmosphere embodies the aspects of the comic strip and makes the steakhouse different from others. Daisy Mae from the Li'l Abner comic strip was Li'l Abner's love interest, tying the two restaurants together. As per usual, you start off the dinner with a salad but there are also several appetizer options to choose from. The appetizer options are quite meat centric such as pork ribs, beef ribs, and half-a-chicken. Pictured above is my entree of the 7 oz filet. Sides included with all of the entrees at this steakhouse are beans, garlic toast, and salsa. Other steak options to choose from are the porterhouse, t-bone, top sirloin, or the ribeye either bone-in or bone-out. If you're not sold on the idea of eating steak then other meat and fish options are beef ribs, pork ribs, half-a-chicken, Alaskan salmon, half lb. cheeseburger or burger, and the beef hot dog. If you're a fan of the comic strip or just want to try eating at this themed dining spot then come down to the other side of Tucson to try this spot out.
