Tucson Restaurants of the Week - September 12, 2019

I love my alma mater but I promise that this will be the last University of Arizona themed restaurant blog for a while. After three years of attending classes in a small area, I became well acquainted with some of the dining spots around campus. I've already talked about the spots in Main Gate Square but there are some other great destinations that are close to campus, are not in the student union, and offer some delicious dishes to try out.

Greek House

My sophomore year I completely hail mary'd my rooming situation by choosing a dorm based off of two things, one being that all of the rooms are doubles meaning there would only be one other roommate and two being that there was a pool. Unfortunately Babcock is the black sheep of the housing community due the location of the dorm being a little further away from campus than any of the other dorms, it is also conveniently located next to a McDonalds, and the concrete exterior looks like an extended stay motel for creeps (in my humble opinion). Greek House is one of the places that I tried within my first month of living in the area since it was right across the street from my dorm. My go-to order was the gyro which is pretty common for Greek food. The gyro is lamb/beef meat served with tzatziki sauce, tomatoes, red onions, and fries all on top of pita bread. I don't believe that fries are typically served in a gyro but they really do add to the sandwich. The gyro is great on its own but I like to put a little bit of Tabasco on top of mine to add some spice. If I wasn't feeling too hungry and I was getting food with my friends then I would just get a side of pita bread and tzatziki because their tzatziki is great.

China Pasta House

One of my college friends that moved away from Tucson swears by this restaurant. We used to go here all of the time after class and I still continue coming here for take out even though I don't live near campus. This tiny spot is located on the opposite side of campus from Greek House and has some of the best Chinese food in the area at a low price. My favorite thing to get is the cabbage and pork dumplings (pictured above). This appetizer either comes with 15 pieces for $6 or 30 pieces for $12 but I think that 15 pieces is a decent sized portion for one person. Another notable dish is the spicy hot noodles for $7.99. The dish is comprised of noodles with bean sprout, pork and tofu puff all in a spicy chili broth. Be sure to check out the pork steamed buns as well which are delicious steamed buns filled with pork and cabbage.

Miss Saigon

There are a couple of different Miss Saigon spots around the area but the one that I went to during my time in school was located at Speedway and Campbell. Similarly to Greek House, this was within walking distance to my first dorm so this is a great location to hit up when hungry and in the mood for Vietnamese. I most likely had my first bowl of pho here because there are many great pho options to choose from. My personal favorite pho off the menu is the rice noodle soup with beef slices and beef meatballs. This is self-explanatorily just a rice noodle soup dish with tender beef slices and beef meatballs. If you're not feeling a bowl of beef rice noodle soup then try out the Miss Saigon tossed rice noodle. The dish is lightly seasoned rice noodle served with broiled shrimp, pork slices, imitation crab and a side of soup. In case of not feeling adventurous and wanting a safer bet then there is always the Miss Saigon fried rice. This is a traditional wok tossed with chicken, shrimp, Vietnamese sausages, bean sprouts and scallions over fried rice.
